Though lacking a tail fluke, a large fin is present around halfway down the body on both the dorsal and ventral sides, the ventral fin having smaller fins in front of and behind it. Propulsion comes from the large fins on the rear portion of the Shadow Leviathan's body. This gives the impression that these grasping appendages once served as walking limbs in a distant bottom-dwelling ancestor, but have since been repurposed into their current form. Seven more pairs of these appendages can be seen running down the body, decreasing in size as they get closer to the tail to the point that the final three pairs are little more than a small spine. These have spines along the inside edge to assist in securing prey. Seven pairs of jointed clawed appendages run down the sides of the mouth. The mouth appears to pass food directly into the creature's stomach, with no real throat structure present. The creature's mouth is located on its underside just behind the head: it is a glowing blue tone, and lined with curved teeth resembling a ribcage with the sternum removed. The creature possesses a flexible spinal cord allowing it to contract and retract its head. The head is composed of a triangular shield-like structure with three pairs of small black eyes and a large red ring in the center. Below each row of red spots is a shorter row of eight circular gill pores that run down the side. Subnautica: Below Zero is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.The Shadow Leviathan has an elongated black body with smooth skin and twin rows of 37 small red spots running from behind the head to just before the tip of the tail. Simply follow the crystals to the Fabricator Base and the next revelation in Subnautica: Below Zero's story. These crystals indicate the entrance of the Fabricator Caverns biome. Eventually, players should begin to encounter large red crystals jutting out of the walls of the cave. Over this time they'll descend further to around 680m. These plants are above a low stone ceiling, marked with several small purple crystals.įrom the Jade Membrane plants, players should head east-northeast for another few hundred meters. As players reach 600m along the left wall of the Crystal Caves, they'll want to look out for a trio of Jade Membrane plants. Fortunately, a blast from the Perimeter Defence upgrade will be enough to escape. The Shadow Leviathans will attack by attempting to grab the player's Seatruck. The Crystal Caves are home to a pair of Shadow Leviathans, one of the most deadly sea creatures in Subnautica Below Zero. Once inside the Crystal Caves, players should stick to the left wall, gradually descending along with the cave floor to a depth of about 600m. It's quite easy to get lost in this area, so it's worth leaving one of Subnautica Below Zero's beacons at the entrance to mark the path. At a depth of 325m, players should turn northwest, and pass between two purple vents to find the entrance to the Crystal Caves biome. Turning northeast here, players should begin a vertical descent through several cave entrances into the deepest part of the Purple Vents biome. This route should take them through the Thermal Spires and Purple Vents biomes until the seafloor drops away sharply. ![]() Starting from the lifepod, players will need to head directly southeast for about 800 meters.
